Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 has now secured the 12th place in the Indian all-time highest-grossing films list, surpassing S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning. The film achieved this milestone on Monday morning and thus strengthened its status as one of the largest Indian box office earners.
During the weekend, the movie jumped 6 places from the 18th to the 12th position. It even pushed its way through all the aforementioned films and finally to Baahubali 1, with Jailer and Sanju being the other two giants it defeated in the process. According to trade estimates, Kantara: Chapter 1 garnered Rs 337.4 crore nett in India during its extended opening weekend.
The next Friday added another Rs 22.25 crore, indicating a 5 percent rise over Thursday’s figures. The collection on Saturday grew significantly to Rs 39 crore nett, while Sunday generated another Rs 40 crore. This has increased Kantara: Chapter 1’s cumulative total to Rs 438.65 crore nett, which is above the domestic lifetime of Rs 421 crore for Baahubali: The Beginning.
Movie trade analysts are of the view that the film’s box office performance continues to be strong, as the major releases are scheduled only after Diwali. Kantara: Chapter 1 has enjoyed such a steady box office run, thanks to the lack of competition, which has enabled it to keep its strong daily numbers.
Kantara: Chapter 1 is eyeing Rs 525.7 crore nett as the next target, which is to surpass Gadar 2 at the 11th position, and thus would need an additional Rs 87 crore to go higher in the list. Market analysts think that with still the audience’s interest and the festive season, the gap could shorten week by week.
Kantara stars Rishab Shetty, Gulshan Devaiah, Jayaram, and Rukmini Vasanth among others. It has been praised for the folklore-based story that has a wide audience. The production team after the box office success has already announced the third chapter in making, with Chapter 1 having the ending that directly sets up the next film. At the same time, the producers of Baahubali have revealed a unique co-release named Baahubali - The Epic, which will return both parts to the cinemas on October 31 to mark the decade of the franchise.
